CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which recently was aquired by Galderma, is a specialty pharmaceutical company now focused on the dermatology market. Its flagship product is Oracea™ which contains doxycycline—a drug that belongs to a family (or class) of drugs known as tetracyclines. Oracea™ is unique in that it contains an anti-inflammatory dose of doxycycline. Unlike traditional doxycyclines, Oracea™ does not work like an antibiotic; Oracea™ does not kill bacteria. This should help prevent bacterial overgrowth and antibiotic resistance which is a possible side effect of long term antibiotic treatment.
CollaGenex is in clinical trials with incyclinide, a chemically modified tetracycline, which has no antibacterial activities but is a pure play anti-inflammatory, and it's being targeted for the treatment of acne. However more important to rosaceans is the clinical phase 3 trials being done with a compound, which is undisclosed at the moment, but referred to as SR101, a topical compound based on the SansRosa technology, for the treatment of redness associated with rosacea.
Another area of research being done by Collagenex is with IMPACS™ (Inhibitors of Multiple Proteases and CytokineS).
